Raising teenagers: Dr. Klein Von Reiche and how parents and teens can have healthy relationships

16 Apr

Raising a teenager is one of the most challenging and daunting tasks that parents face. Dr. Klein Von Reiche, a therapist, believes that conflicts between parents and children are normal. However, the way these conflicts are dealt with is crucial in the development of the relationship between teenagers and their parents.

During their adolescent years, kids are on the process of self-discovery. It is during that stage when they are desperate for independence yet unwilling to take on huge responsibilities. They often feel frustrated when things don’t go their way and are under a lot of pressure from their peers. On the other hand, parents often feel that their authority is questioned when their children refuse to take their orders or go against their beliefs or values. Thus, conflicts arise between these two parties.

Therapists like Dr. Klein Von Reiche agree that these arguments – even if they happen frequently – can be properly managed. Since teenagers are often impulsive because they are trying really hard not to be seen as children, parents must learn to choose which battles they should take with their kids. Instead of commenting on little things like their kids’ fashion sense and interests, parents should let their kids discover themselves and set aside their concerns until they notice trouble such as substance abuse or violence.

Just like in other kinds of relationships, conflicts between parents and teenagers can be settled when each party is willing to resolve them. According to Dr. Von Reiche, the key to resolving these conflicts is to see them as opportunities for personal growth.
